During the middle part of February, 2011, a historic battle of human versus supercomputer is scheduled to take place. The machines will be represented by a computer that is made by IBM. This is not a normal computer by any means, as Watson (as he is known) has been four years in the making. He plans to showcase his intelligence on the game show called “Jeopardy”. He will face off against two previous Jeopardy champions, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter.
Why This Game Show
You may wonder why this television show is chosen for the showdown between machine and mankind. This show is considered to be an ideal arena for showcasing some of the skills that Watson is said to possess. There are several major factors that make Jeopardy the right place.
Watson will have to be learned in an enormous amount of information. This is due to the fact that the game show has unlimited possibilities for topics. Topics on the show can range from Presidents of the United States, to world geography, and these are only two of the millions of possibilities. Even the most advanced computer will need to dig deep into its memory banks.
Human language may be the most difficult task that Watson faces. Processing language involves many different things that people do on an unconscious level. Yet, Watson will have to do all of these things without a subconscious mind, to help him. There are an extraordinary amount of variables and information flowing, when language is processed.
Simply understanding human language is difficult enough for any machine. However, a game show may present language in the form of slang or riddles that offer a “play on words”. This can add to the difficulty level, a great deal. It will take much more than a normal amount of language processing to compete with people on this level.
Representing Humanity
The people that will compete against Watson will not simply be someone taken off the streets. These two people are record setting Jeopardy winners. Jennings has more than two and one half million dollars in winnings, and Rutter has a little more than three million dollars in winnings. This can make a difficult challenge for Watson, even more difficult.
Exhibition or Practice Game
When Watson and the men face off in February, it will not be their first meeting, as they already have a practice game to their credit. This practice game takes place is in Yorktown Heights, and Watson makes a very favorable impression on the audience. His replies are animated and do not appear to be coming from any kind of machine. During the game, Watson does not get any questions wrong. However, he does not compete in every category. For example, he sits silently as Jennings answers every question in the category of “Children’s Books”. Yet, when the dust clears and the practice game is over, the score is Watson 1 and the men 0.
Conclusion
During the middle part of February, in 2011, a computer from IBM named Watson will face off against two men. The showdown is pitted as human versus supercomputer, and will take place of the game show “Jeopardy”. The two men that Watson faces are Jeopardy champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings. This show will challenge Watson in many ways, especially in the area of processing language.
